WHAT ARE SOLAR PANELS?

Solar panels transform the sun's energy into usable electricity.  Solar PV or photovoltaic panels are so named because of the special cells inside the panel.

• Photo = photons (light particles) from the sun.

• Voltaic = electricity (as in volts).

​

Solar PV panels generate free energy you can either use as electricity in your home or business, or sell back to the national grid.

HOW DO SOLAR PANELS WORK?

​

Each solar panel comprises photovoltaic cells coated with a thin film of silicon, creating a semiconductor. 

​

Light particles (photons) hitting the cells and silicon inside knock electrons off the surface, generating an electrical charge, or photovoltaic effect, which is channelled to an inverter as DC electricity, then converted to an AC current.

​

This current is then routed to a meter and fuse box for you to use as required in your property.
